A new record of giant squid Architeuthis sp. (Cephalopoda: Oegopsida) in Brazilian waters Rev. Bras. Zool.
Martins,Rodrigo Silvestre; Perez,José Angel Alvarez.
A carcass of a giant squid Architeuthis sp. was found afloat off Southern Brazil (28°05'S, 45°35'W) on 29 August 1999. The specimen was a mature female of 116 cm mantle length and had arms incomplete and tentacles missing. The specimen was morphologically similar to those previously described for the Southwest Atlantic, but a few peculiarities were found on the shape of the fins, head and the cross-section and length of ventral arms. Spermatophores were found embedded within the skin of the left ventral arm, at around 60 cm from the mouth, and could be traced to the core of the arm, radiating nearly four centimeters from the point of entry. This was the third record of Architeuthis in Brazilian waters and the eighth in Southwest Atlantic when the specimen...

Are Abrolhos no-take area sites of naïve fish? An evaluation using flight initiation distance of labrids Neotropical Ichthyology
Nunes,José de Anchieta C. C.; Loiola,Miguel; Miranda,Ricardo J.; Sampaio,Cláudio L. S.; Barros,Francisco.
ABSTRACT Fishing pressure affects the behavior of reef fish, especially of fishery-targeted species. In this context, it is critical to understand if fish behavior is preserved in no-take areas (NTAs), which are considered the best instrument for the recovery of fish stocks. Comparing the flight initiation distances (FIDs) of fish inhabiting multiple-use areas (MUAs), where fishing is allowed (including spearfishing), and NTAs is a useful approach to test whether NTAs can be effective as fish refuges. Here, we compared whether the FIDs of two target (Sparisoma axillare and Scarus trispinosus ) and one non-target (Halichoeres poeyi ) labrids are greater in the MUAs than in the NTAs. We also investigated whether group size (GS) and body size (BS) exert any...

Bycatch fauna of seabob shrimp trawl fisheries from Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Freitas Júnior,Felipe; Christoffersen,Martin Lindsey.
Marine communities in tropical regions contain a great diversity of species that play key roles in ecological processes. The observed bycatch fauna in artisanal fishing for the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) in the southwest Atlantic exceeds the quantity of commercial shrimp captured. This bycatch has not been previously inventoried extensively in Brazil, particularly in the State of Santa Catarina, where small-scale shrimp fisheries is a traditional activity and dominates the local fishing economy. Six municipalities were sampled three times a month, from 1996 to 2011, yielding 216 species belonging to the bycatch (7 cnidarians, 22 mollusks, 42 crustaceans, 11 echinoderms, and 134 fishes). Bycatch management is a pressing aspect of...

Diconodinium lurense sp. nov., a late Maastrichtian to Danian dinoflagellate cyst from southwest Atlantic basins Ameghiniana
Guerstein,G. Raquel; Junciel,Gabriela L.; Guler,M.Verónica; Daners,Gloria.
Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic deposits from the Colorado and Austral basins, Argentina and the Punta del Este Basin, Uruguay contain diverse organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts, including Diconodinium lurense sp. nov. which occurs in the late Maastrichtian and Danian throughout the basins. The new species is characterized by an autophragm that is densely covered by short spines and by relatively long apical and antapical horns, and by a variable Ia to IPa archeopyle. On our evidence, the stratigraphical range of Diconodinium lurense sp. nov. is latest Maastrichtian to Danian, and is thus a useful biostratigraphical marker for the Cretaceous-Palaeogene transition in the southwest Atlantic basins.

Diet composition and feeding habits of the eyespot skate, Atlantoraja cyclophora (Elasmobranchii: Arhynchobatidae), off Uruguay and northern Argentina Neotropical Ichthyology
Barbini,Santiago A.; Lucifora,Luis O..
ABSTRACT The eyespot skate, Atlantoraja cyclophora, is an endemic species from the southwestern Atlantic, occurring from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to northern Patagonia, Argentina. The feeding habits of this species, from off Uruguay and north Argentina, were evaluated using a multiple hypothesis modelling approach. In general, the diet was composed mainly of decapod crustaceans, followed by teleost fishes. Molluscs, mysidaceans, amphipods, isopods, lancelets and elasmobranchs were consumed in lower proportion. The consumption of shrimps drecreased with increasing body size of A. cyclophora. On the other hand, the consumption of teleosts increased with body size. Mature individuals preyed more heavily on crabs than immature individuals. Teleosts were...

Feeding habits of the cockfish, Callorhinchus callorynchus (Holocephali: Callorhinchidae) from off northern Argentina Neotropical Ichthyology
Roman,Jorge M.; Chierichetti,Melisa A.; Barbini,Santiago A.; Scenna,Lorena B..
ABSTRACT The feeding habits of Callorhinchus callorynchus were investigated in coastal waters off northern Argentina. The effect of body size, seasons and regions was evaluated on female diet composition using a multiple-hypothesis modelling approach. Callorhinchus callorynchus fed mainly on bivalves (55.61% PSIRI), followed by brachyuran crabs (10.62% PSIRI) and isopods (10.13% PSIRI). Callorhinchus callorynchus females showed changes in the diet composition with increasing body size and also between seasons and regions. Further, this species is able to consume larger bivalves as it grows. Trophic level was 3.15, characterizing it as a secondary consumer. We conclude that C. callorynchus showed a behavior of crushing hard prey, mainly on bivalves,...

Marine zooplankton studies in Brazil: a brief evaluation and perspectives Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lopes,Rubens M..
Marine zooplankton research in Brazil has been primarily descriptive, with most studies focusing on community structure analysis and related issues. The composition and spatial distribution of several taxonomic groups are currently well known, although less-abundant and small-sized taxa as well as initial stages of almost all species have received little attention. Some numerically important taxa such as heterotrophic protists, ctenophores, acoel turbellarians and ostracods remain virtually unstudied. Large sectors of the continental shelf have not been sampled in detail, particularly those areas influenced by the North Brazil Current (5ºN-15ºS). Zooplankton abundance and biomass in offshore waters have seldom been quantified, and information on the...

MICROANATOMY OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM OF ENTEROCTOPUS MEGALOCYATHUS (CEPHALOPODA, OCTOPODA) OF THE SOUTHWEST ATLANTIC Boletín de Investigaciones
Griselda Garri,Rosana; Lauria de Cidre,Lilia.
A detailed description of the microanatomy of the digestive system of Enteroctopus megalocyathus is given, and this revealed some differences between this octopod species and other species of Octopodidae previously described. These differences are mainly related to tissues lining the lumen of digestive organs. Unlike descriptions in some octopods mucosa, in E. megalocyathus a pseudostratified epithelium is found covering the lumen of oesophagus, crop, stomach, intestine and caecum. Another major finding is that in the posterior salivary glands, two cell types are present in the same tubular adenomere; they do not constitute independent glandular tubules with only one type of glandular cells. The tubules of these glands are lined by two distinct epithelial...

Short-term movements and habitat preferences of sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus (Istiophoridae), along the southeast coast of Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Mourato,Bruno L.; Carvalho,Felipe; Musyl,Michael; Amorim,Alberto; Pacheco,Jose C.; Hazin,Humberto; Hazin,Fábio.
Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on four sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, in the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro State in southeast Brazil during January and February of 2009 (sailfish I and II) and between November 2010 and January 2011 (sailfish III and IV). The total number of days monitored (i.e., time that the tags remained attached) were 12 (sailfish I), 51 (sailfish II), 16 (sailfish III) and 43 days (sailfish IV). The results indicate a clear pattern of vertical habitat utilization with the majority of the time spent concentrated near the uniform sea surface layer occupying a relatively narrow temperature range. Despite the clear preference for epipelagic surface waters, sailfish regularly undertook vertical excursions into...

The reproductive biology of Pinguipes brasilianus Cuvier, 1829 (Osteichthyes: Pinguipedidae) in temperate rocky reefs of Argentina Neotropical Ichthyology
Villanueva-Gomila,Gabriela L.; Macchi,Gustavo J.; Ehrlich,Martín D.; Irigoyen,Alejo J.; Venerus,Leonardo A..
ABSTRACT Pinguipes brasilianus is a conspicuous and abundant rocky-reef fish inhabiting the Northern Patagonian gulfs of Argentina, Southwest Atlantic. This study describes its reproductive biology in this region. We made macroscopic and histological descriptions of the testis and ovary development, analyzed the evolution of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) in both sexes throughout the year, and estimated fecundity and length at 50% maturity for females. Pinguipes brasilianus is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity and an extended reproductive season, encompassing austral spring and summer. Low GSI values in males (monthly means ranged between 0.11% and 0.75%) and low relative fecundity in female fish (between 2 and 44 oocytes/g) are...

The Trinidade Petrel (Pterodroma arminjoniana) at Golfo San Matías: a new species for Argentina Hornero
Savigny,Christian; Caille,Guillermo; González,Raúl; Guillermo,Harris.
As part of a survey of marine birds in the Southwest Atlantic, a field trip was made to Golfo San Matías, on the coast of southern Argentina, to accomplish a first evaluation of seabirds associated with the Argentine squid Illex argentinus fishery by jiggers. Between 7-21 July 2003, 20 species of seabirds belonging to 6 families were observed. On July 21, at 41°17'S, 64°36'W, a Trinidade Petrel (Pterodroma arminjoniana) was observed along with 100 Thalassarche melanophris, 200 Larus dominicanus, 10 Macronectes giganteus, 20 Oceanites oceanicus and 10 Procellaria aequinoctialis. We discuss some aspects of field identification, taxonomy and conservation. The data and circumstances of our record allows us to speculate that it is possible that vagrant birds,...

Trophic niche comparison between two predators in northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil: a stable isotopes approach Biota Neotropica
Beneditto,Ana Paula Madeira Di; Rezende,Carlos Eduardo; Camargo,Plínio Barbosa; Kehrig,Helena Amaral.
The trophic niche of the sympatric predators Pontoporia blainvillei(franciscana dolphin) and Trichiurus lepturus (ribbonfish) was compared by stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) ratios in hepatic and muscular tissues to understand how they co-exist in the northern Rio de Janeiro State (21°30′S-22°15′S), south-eastern Brazil. Dolphin specimens were incidentally captured through commercial gillnet fisheries, while fish specimens were the target of these fisheries. The predators had similar δ15N values in the liver (P. blainvillei: 14.6 ± 1.0‰; T. lepturus: 14.4 ± 0.6‰), which indicates similar trophic position in the recent food intake. However,P. blainvillei showed lighter δ15N values in muscle (13.8 ± 1.0‰) than T. lepturus (15.0 ± 0.4‰), revealing differences...
